WordPress or a custom build: which website do you need?

A plain comparison of cost, speed, editing and when each option makes sense for a business website.

Most business websites do not need to be built from scratch. Some do. Here is how to tell which one you are.

When WordPress is the right choice

  • You want to edit pages, add blog posts and change prices yourself.
  • You need a normal business site: services, contact form, blog, a few landing pages.
  • You want to launch in days or weeks, not months.
  • You have a modest budget and want to pay for design and content, not plumbing.

A well-built WordPress site is fast, easy to rank and easy to hand over. The key words are "well-built": a light theme, few plugins, optimised images and regular updates.

When a custom build is worth it

  • The site is really an application: customer accounts, bookings with rules, dashboards, or connections to your own systems.
  • You have heavy traffic, or special security and performance needs.
  • The thing you sell is software, and the website is the product.

What it costs, roughly

A WordPress site is usually a fraction of the cost of a custom build, and cheaper to change later. A custom build costs more up front and needs a developer for every change, but does exactly what you need.

Our advice

Start with WordPress unless you can name something specific it cannot do. You can always move the one feature that needs custom code into its own small application later, without rebuilding everything.
